QUICK & EASY - ANYONE CAN DO IT!
One ball makes one pair of flip flops!
Beginner Level
Materials:
Lion Brand fun-fur - 1 ball of color your choice
1 pair of flip-flops
Lion Brand size K-10.5 (6.5 mm) crochet hook
Lion Brand large-eyed blunt needle (to weave in ends)
Helpful Hints:
Flip flops are made with 2 strands (pieces) held together and used as though they werre a singel strand.
For singel-color effect, you can EITHER use 2 balls of the same solid color yarn OR you can pull 1 strand from the center of the ball and 1 strand from the outside.
For a mixed color effect, use 1 strand each of 2 colors held together, or use 2 strands of a print color.
For stripes, change colors every 15 wraps/stitches or so
Wrapping Instructions:
Measure four 13-yard lengths of yarn (or two 13-yard each of two colors) and wind each length into a small ball. Use two balls for each flip flop (one of each color per flip flop if you use two colors). Starting at one side of the strap, holding the yarn from two balls together (or one end each from one ball), tie a knot around the strap with both strands. Wrap the yarn to prevent the strap from showing through. Wrap a few extra times at the toe for fullness. Move to the other side of the thong and continue wrapping to the end of the strap. Knot securing and trim ends.
Crochet Instructions:
Make a slip knot with 2 strands of yarn held together. Holding the yarn across the top of the flip flop strap, reaching under the strap, catch the yarn leading from the ball(s) with the hook. You now have two (double strands) on the hook. Wrap the arn around the hood and pull it through both loops. You have now made a single crochet. Repeat until the strap is completely covered. When the strap is completely covered, cut the yarn to 5" and pull the end through the last remaining loop. Thread the blunt needle with the arn ends and pull back through a few stitches to hide (you can also use a crochet hook to do this). Trim the ends.
Note - for the best coverage start at the toe in the center of each strap and work back, then return to the center to do the other side. For a very furry look, push the stitches tightly toward the toe.
(What Works Better For Me)
I choose to start at one end of the flip flop and work my way around to the other end adding additional stitches before and after the thong (middle) part of the flip flop allowing for the stretch that will occur when trying this method.
I also push the stitches back towards the end of each side as I crochet them to keep the stitches stable and sturdy. Sometimes if the stitches are not secure they will bunch up at the toe creating more of a pom pom look which can be great if this is the effect that you want to have. I have also used a worsted weight yarn along with the fun-fur as one one of the two strands. This gives my project stability as well but try to match up the color of the yarn and fun-furn as much as possible unless you want to have the variations which can also be fun.
This method also works better for me because I only have two strands at the end that need to be weaved in and this method is more helpful when adding bling (beads) to the flip flops.
I turn the flip flop upside down and weave the ends towards the front (thong/middle) part of the flip flop to hide the loose ends better giving the flip flop a cleaner look.
The more you make them the more you will begin to make determinations on what works best for you opening you up to let your creativity FLY!
Optional - Finish your flip flops by gluing a large button, rhinestone, bead, etc. to the toe.

I also plan on adding a video soon...on how I do this for those of you who learn by seeing...not sure when I will get it done...but I promise that I will.
JUST REMEMBER TO HAVE FUN WHEN MAKING YOUR FUN FLOPS!
